The 14th Annual TYR High School Classic has 24 schools and over 625 swimmers and divers registered from around the state. The competition starts Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on the University of Arizona Campus, just east of McKale Center.
Seven of the top ten ranked Division V boy's teams will be taking part in the Old Pueblo Soccer Classic this Friday and Saturday in Tucson. Desert Christian is the host team.
State qualifying is getting heating up and teams and golfer are beginning to hit their stride heading into the final weeks. That was the case Monday when Catalina Foothills shot a 143 at Del Urich to get past Rincon/University (146) and Marana (150).
We are now at least five games into the season and some teams have played section games and some have not. As you know, the section winners will earn an automatic berth to the state playoffs while the rest will be fighting for an at-large bid.
Boys and Girls Individual Qualification:
Each players best seven (7) rounds will be used for qualifying.
Division I: The top 15 individuals not on a qualifying team
Division II: The top 21 individuals not on a qualifying team
The first official AIA/MaxPreps Rankings for girl's volleyball came out Tuesday morning with few if any surprises. Teams in each of the five divisions will be fighting for a playoff spot with the automatic bids handed out to each of the section champions.
Southern Arizona DII/III Games of the Week
Although all games are important, here are a couple from each division that are sure to shape the rest of the season. Kickoff at 7 p.m.
Sahuarita defeated Cholla 52-6 in a game a few pundits saw ending the other way. A Charger win may have been a safe and logical prediction considering the 3-0 record Cholla sported while the Mustangs came in winless at 0-3 but a closer look at the three losses was warranted.
Tucson Sahuaro remained perfect after the Cougars defeated Tucson 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-12) on Thursday night. The win solidified the Cougars as one of the teams to beat in Southern Arizona after the squad improved to 5-0 in division play and 11-0 overall including a six-game sweep at the TUSD Invitational two weekends ago.
A pair of junior runners are currently at the top of the Cross Country list. Sierra Vista Buena standout Manuel Olivo-Quinones and Rio Rico state champion Allie Schadler are safely ahead of the pack.
Tucson Sahuaro senior Kathryn Ottman played almost flawless golf on Saturday to capture the individual championship of the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawk Invitational held at the OMNI Tucson National.
Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge took a gamble opening up the season against Division I power Chandler Hamilton. The Nighthawks may have lost that game 44-7 but they gained so much more. The Nighthawks learned how to adjust and grow together as a team and their learning curve was on display Friday night thanks to a 33-7 win over Tucson Salpointe.
Gilbert Mesquite overcame a slow start to defeat Marana Mountain View in five sets (16-25, 25-21, 25-15, 24-26 and 15-6) Thursday night on the road. The 3-2 win mirrored the bumpy start the Wildcats (2-2) have experienced barely four matches into the season.
Salpointe hosted Sahuaro and Oro Valley Canyon del Oro on Tuesday at Randolph North in Tucson and Hughes finished with a 35 and Harris shot a 38. Sahuaro and Salpointe tied with a team score of 156 and The Dorados came in with a 207.
Sahuaro, Rincon/University, Tucson and Cienega went 3-0 during pool play to set up an epic playoff on Saturday at the TUSD Girl's Volleyball Tournament held at Pueblo High School.
Oro Valley Pusch Ridge was looking for revenge after losing to Benson last week but, in football, that means the next team on the schedule is usually in trouble and Bisbee found plenty of it on Friday night after losing big, 50-6.
Two-time state champion Allie Schadler of Rio Rico is back for her junior year. She is our logical choice for the Southern Arizona Preseason Runner of the Year. On the boy's side, however, the top eight runners and the top 15 of 20 have all graduated.
Tucson Catalina Foothills held on for a 30-24 win over Tucson Pueblo Friday night in an atmosphere that head coach Jeff Scurran aptly described as a "circus."
Harris competed in several other junior events this summer and will be traveling to Scottsdale this weekend to compete in the Scottsdale Junior Championship. She will also compete in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Girl’s Championship in early September in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Division I and II golf season got underway Monday and several Southern Arizona standouts have already begun to post qualifying rounds for the state tournament.
