The semifinal round of the 4A state volleyball championship favored the lower seeds as No. 4 Sunrise Mountain swept No. 1 Cactus Shadows and No. 3 Salpointe beat No. 2 Cactus 3-1 on Tuesday night.
Four big schools from Southern Arizona will live to see another week thanks to a couple of thrilling finishes from the 5A ranks and a dominating performance from Cienega and Salpointe.
With over 1,000 yards of combined offense, No. 6 Sabino and No. 13 Empire came through with plenty of fireworks, but Sabercats scored early and often to take the win and the automatic playoff berth.
