Cesar Chavez claims another region title

The Cesar Chavez Champions clinched the Class 6A Metro Region championship with their 54-0 win over Trevor Browne Friday night.
The Champions (6-3, 4-0) spoiled the Bruins’ (3-6, 2-2) senior night by taking home their third consecutive region title and pitching their third consecutive shutout against Trevor Browne.
For senior running back and linebacker Andrew Blitzke, it is even more special to win three region championships all three years he has been on the team.
“It’s great to come out here and dominate the Phoenix Union” Blitzke said, “We’re still the top dogs.”
Cesar Chavez is undefeated this season in the Metro with a scoring differential of 182 points in just four games. They are scoring an average of about 54 points in the past four games and are only giving up an average of eight points. Dominance might be the right word.
Coach Manuel Alcantar is only in his second year in control and has guaranteed another winning season and is batting 1.000 in region titles.
“It’s not for me, man,” Alcantar said, “It’s for all the coaches, the parents, the boosters and the whole city of Laveen. It goes for them because we’re all one family. I’m proud of them they’re the ones who helped us get there.”
Junior quarterback Josh Garcia got his first start of the night replacing Lukas Arnds who is injured, but the Champions may be able to get back for the playoffs.
“(Arnds) broke his clavicle,” Alcantar said, “But it’s a very small break so there’s a possibility he’ll be coming back out in two weeks, but for now Josh is taking the reins, and there is a chance he’ll play in the playoffs.”
However, the Champions look like they are in capable hands with Garcia under center, and they played to his strengths in his first ever varsity start.
“I had a lot of support from my teammates this week,” Garcia said. “(There were) a lot of play calls that were specific to my playing ability, and that is what really helped me get into the game.”
Blitzke, one of the few seniors on the team, only has one regular season game left and the reality of the situation is finally setting in.
“The first, second and third game it didn’t really feel any different, but now this is my last time wearing the white jerseys,” Blitzke said. “Next week is the last home game, and it’s hitting me.”
The Champions close out their regular season with Alhambra on Oct. 26 with a kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
