Vincent La Gatta shines In Valley Christian win
September 1, 2018 by Mark Feldman, Arizona State University
People all across Chandler might not be calling Valley Christian High School the “Trojans” anymore.
They might be calling junior football player Vincent La Gatta a “trojan” as well after his all-around impressive and dominant performance in a 38-21 win against Scottsdale Christian Academy Friday.
La Gatta plays quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. He made an impact at all those positions with a throwing touchdown, an interception plus a fumble recovery and two rushing touchdowns. The longer of the two rushing touchdowns was 40 yards.
“I saw out of him what I have seen all summer and fall.” said coach Kirk Sundberg. “He is an electric player. We try to line him up in a bunch of different places. I try to make the defense think where he is going to be each and every snap.”
La Gatta is definitely not the biggest player on the field, but he knows the hard work off the field led him triggered his big game.
“It was the practice and preparation that we had all week which really helped me,” La Gatta said. “We were coming off a short week after the game against Chino Valley and we worked our tails off. It was a team effort and we all had to pitch in with our certain jobs.
The offensive outburst by Valley Christian (2-0) was not all about La Gatta. The other quarterback for Valley Christian, senior Peyton Hanzal, took command of the offense in the second half and made sure his team played smart in the fourth quarter.
“Everyone did their job tonight,” Hanzal said. “We practice all week on making sure everyone does their job. Our theme of the week was be the ‘I' in team. If everyone does their own job then things will go right.”
Like any coach, Sundberg knows the Trojans can improve before their next game.
“I would love to see us improve our physicality. Especially getting off the ball with our offensive line. We did a really good job on that in the third and fourth quarter and I would love to see that from the very beginning,” Sundberg said
The Trojans look to improve to 3-0 when they travel to Arizona Lutheran Friday.
