CHRIS MOON INVITATIONAL: Sahuaro to face St. Laurence in championship

St. Laurence (3-0) will face Sahuaro (2-1) Friday for the championship of the Chris Moon National Baseball Tournament taking place at Cherry Field in Tucson.  The Vikings, located a few miles southwest of Chicago, have dominated the competition, outscoring opponents 48-4 during pool play.

St. Laurence junior standout Matt McCormick blasted a 3-run shot against Rio Rico on Thursday and he followed that up with a walk-off grand slam to end the game in the fifth inning. McCormick finished 2-for-3 with seven RBI, Justin Rios went 3-4 with a triple and two RBI and Jake Vera picked up the other two RBI. Freshman Vito Valincius threw a one hitter for the Vikings with Hawks standout Cristobal Flores picking up a single in the top of the fifth inning.

Sahuaro did not have a game on Thursday.

Rio Rico will play Tucson in the third place game on Friday. The Badgers beat San Marcos, California 7-4 on Thursday with Omar Escobedo leading the Badgers at the plate by going 2-4 with an RBI. Josue Barcelo finished 1-3 with two RBI. BJ Esqueda picked up the win for the Badgers and Raymundo Leon also saw pitching action.

Andrew Aragon hit a home run for San Marcos and he finished 2-3 while Erik Larsen went 2-3 with a double.

Flowing Wells beat Arvada West, Colorado 13-9 in other action from Thursday. Andres Holguin went 4-4 with a triple for the Caballeros, Brock Barkhusrt went 3-3 with a home run and three RBI and Elian Quintana went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Simon Boggie added a double and two RBI and Juan Pablo Ruedaflores had two RBI.

Noah Estrella picked up the win for Flowing Wells and Antoni Dorado also saw action.

Zach D'Amico and Braden Thompson hit doubles for Arvada West and Vinson Britton and Liam Spaw hit triples. Dylan Capritla had a double and a triple. Britton led the team with three RBI.
