Mountain View Toros boys volleyball defeated the Corona Del Sol Aztecs Tuesday night at the Sammy Duane Gymnasium in Tempe.
The Aztecs started the night off strong winning the first set 25-18, then quickly succumbed to the pressure put on by the Toros during the next three sets. The Aztecs put up a steady hustle and good serves but the Toros were big and brought hard defense which is what ultimately won them the game.
"We have to stop hesitating if we want to win,” said head coach of the Aztecs, Geoff Horewitch. “Right now we have one freshman out on the floor so the more involved we can get him, the less hesitation we will have.”
The third set was tied 23-23, then the Toros had back-to-back rallies to give them the 25 points needed to win the set. During that crucial moment of the third set there was a timeout called and Horewitch made sure to tell his team at that point to relax and breathe as they continued throughout the set.
Aztecs 6-4 senior Chris Davis served up plenty of power but also agrees with Coach Horewitch in regards to his team's constant hesitation. “I think we really had a lot of hustle in our game tonight but yeah we hesitated a lot throughout this game so that only hurt us,” Davis said.
The Toros are not only a strong defensive team but they are able to construct offensive strategies that throw off their opponent. Their head coach, Kevin Powell ,credits his team's fluent passing for the many strategies they were able to engage in as a unit.
“We’re a dangerous team for passing and serving which gives up more variability, making it difficult for the other team to respond to what we throw at them,” said Powell. “We never let teams key in on what we’re doing so they really don’t know how to defend us.”
The boys season started less than a month ago and both teams have plans for how they want to continue throughout the season. The Aztecs and Toros both have two upcoming games this week.
“Tonight we were offensively able to turn the ball around the block a little bit and we started showing some more heart with our serves.” Horewitch said. “But as the season progresses I want us to build off of what we did tonight in the first set.”
Powell of the Toros knows his team can bring the power necessary to put up more wins this season but also knows areas where his team can continue to improve. “We lack a little bit of ball control as far as our swinging and our hitting is concerned,” said Powell. “We know our offensive play can be intimidating with our big guys but there is always room for improvement.”
