It was a rough first round for the boys of Southern Arizona with only five out of 14 teams surviving the first round of the Division II and III state playoffs Wednesday night.

In D-II action, No. 3 Nogales defeated No. 14 Tucson Catalina Foothills 2-1 in extra time. Julie Walters guided the Falcons to four state championships and over 300 wins in her 23-year career. The loss at Nogales signaled the end of an impressive run for the Pima County Hall of Fame coach as she is retiring from teaching and coaching.

Nogales will move on to the quarterfinal round on Saturday where they will host No. 11 San Luis at 2 p.m. San Luis knocked out No. 6 Tucson High 2-1 in a heated match, ending the Badgers' quest to defend their state championship.

Catalina Foothills took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute but Nogales tied things up in the 68th and then scored the winning goal five minutes into the first overtime period. In the San Luis win, Cesar Moreno (Andres Elizalde) gave San Luis a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute but Nick Duarte tied things up three minutes later. Marlon Atondo put in the game-winner in the 66th minute.

No. 4 Marana Mountain View defeated No. 13 Oro Valley Canyon del Oro 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round where they will host No. 5 Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep.

Notre Dame knocked off No. 12 Salpointe 1-0 to set up their half of the match.  In the Mountain View win, Canyon del Oro standout defender Matthew Gardner was unable to suit up causing a major shift in positioning by head coach Jake Gillengerten.

The match was already interesting from the beginning with Gillengerten moving from Mountain View to coach CDO after three years and now sophomore sensation Caleb Sanchez was forced to move back in the shift, removing one of the state's most prolific scorers (28 goals) from making many threats early on.

Not to use the new positioning as an excuse, Gillengerten praised his current athletes and his former players at Mountain View. "We had to change guys around but we were in it for a while," explained Gillengerten.

"We need to keep working and use Mountain View as an example. If we can't move on then I'm happy they are going forward," he added.

Mountain View first-year coach Tony Jensen knew the situation may have been a difficult one for his team but he made it a point not to talk about the coaching change before the match. Still, his team was a little off in the beginning.

"We played a tough CDO squad and we were in a dog fight," said Jensen. "We both battled, knowing it could be the last game for the loser."

One player not affected by the coaching change was junior Vadaunte Holland. A transfer from Italy, the strong and athletic midfielder literally carried a Dorado defender in the box to give Mountain View a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.

"I took a great pass from Fredi (Chacon) and turned," explained Holland. "I took a shot and put it in."

When asked about the defender holding him the whole time Holland responded, "Nothing can really stop us."

Justin Stoermer put away a corner kick from Kenny Chacon in the 32nd minute for the earlier 1-0 lead.

Jensen would like to see Holland get more selfish as the playoffs move forward and they might need him to be very selfish if they want to get past Notre Dame. Grayson Naquin assisted Zade Ghani in the 24th minute against Salpointe and held on the rest of the way.

In D-III action, No. 9 Tucson Catalina defeated No. 8 Thatcher 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round where they will take on No. 1 Yuma Catholic. Yuma Catholic defeated No. 16 Safford 5-1 and Catalina will be forced to deal with the scoring from juniors Jorge Ruiz and Alexis Rodriguez. The duo has combined for over 50 goals this year so far.

No. 2 Tucson Amphitheater needed overtime to defeat No. 15 Phoenix North Pointe Prep 2-0 but "win and move on" is the name of the game and they will host No.7 Tucson Palo Verde on Saturday in the quarterfinal round.

Palo Verde defeated No. 10 Florence 2-1.
