Mesa Mountain View pitcher Val Kaff has been selected Gatorade Arizona Softball Player of the Year for 2013 after completing a stellar four-year career and senior season.

Kaff led the Lady Toros (27-8) to the Division I loser's bracket final last month with her prowess in the circle. Kaff posted a 27-7 record with a 0.84 earned-run average. She collected a whopping 431 strikeouts and walked 65 in 216 2/3 innings. Among her 27 wins were 16 shutouts and two no-hitters. She also batted .310 with two homers and 18 RBI.

Chaparral softball coach Stefanie Ewing, whose team defeated Mountain View to reach the Division I title game,  succinctly described Kaff's contribution to her team.

"Mountain View was literally Val Kaff," Ewing said. "The only chance they had to win games was if she was on. Talk about rising up every single game and not letting the pressure break you. I was extremely impressed by Val."

Kaff has signed with Michigan State to play softball beginning this fall. She also sports a 3.65 GPA and volunteered at a  homeless shelter and food bank, and donated time to the Salvation Army and youth coaching and umpiring.
