It seems more often than not, all Mesa Mountain View softball pitcher Val Kaff needs is one run and the Toros win.

Kaff got three runs to work with Friday afternoon, plenty to deny upset-minded Desert Ridge, 3-0, in a Division I contest at Mountain View.

Mountain View, which won the Dorado Classic in Tucson last week, ran its record to 8-0 on the young season. The Lady Toros are 2-0 in power-ranking games. Kaff, a senior, has tossed 45 consecutive scoreless innings. She's allowed one run (earned) this season in the season-opener vs. Boulder Creek last week. She's started and won all eight games and pitched at least five innings in all of them. The big triumph last week was a 3-0 win over Canyon del Oro in the  Dorado Classic title game last Saturday.

Desert Ridge (6-3 overall, 1-1 prg) was gunning for a second straight qualiity victory. The Lady Jaguars upended defending state champion Red Mountain, 3-2, on Thursday. Topping the Lady Toros and Kaff would have been a two-pack to be proud of.

Kaff would have none of it.

"She is tough and I feel the best in the state," Mountain View coach Joe Goodman said. "She took a ball off her finger in the championship game against CDO that split her finger tip and tore the nail off. I went out to see if she needed out. She basically told me to "get out of here".

Desert Ridge's best and only shot at Kaff on Friday came in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Jackie Hernandez singled to left and Kaff walked No. 2 hitter Alyssa Sanchez. Kaff rared back and fanned the next two batters, but loaded the basesby hitting Sarah Captain with a pitch. Kaff escaped getting Coutney O'Brien to pop to short. Kaff allowed two singles the rest of the way. She fanned nine.

The game's hitting standout was Mountain View's Brittney Lindblom. Lindblom singled leading off the Lady Toros first and scored on Kaff's ground out for the early 1-0 lead. Lindblom drove in a run in the fifth (a second run scored on an error in center field) with a single. Page and Maddy Roberts had bunt singles in front of Lindblom and scored.

Desert Ridge freshman Bailey Klitzke pitched a solid game in taking the loss. Klitzke allowed six hits, struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. She outdueled Red Mountain's Bre Macha a day earlier.
