Gilbert, Basha foiled in elite bracket semis of Nike TOC VB

Gilbert and Basha high schools finished just shy Saturday of reaching the finals of the Platinum Division of the 4th annual Nike Tournament of Champions Volleyball Tournament at Court One in Tempe.
The Platinum Division is the tournament's marquee division and teams advanced to that division based on their pool play results on Friday. Gilbert, Basha and Desert Vista were the only Arizona schools to reach platinum. The other five were out-of-state entries St. Joseph's Academy from St. Louis, Missouri; The Bishop's Schoo in La Jolla, Calif.; Menlo High of Atherton, Calif.; Marist High from Chicago and Bishop Gorman from Las Vegas.
Basha was eliminated in two sets by Marist in the semifinals. Scores were 25-16, 25-19. Basha was 3-0 in pool play on Friday and defeated Menlo in the quarters on Saturday, 25-17, 25-23. Gilbert opened platinum play sweeping Desert Vista, 25-21. 25-14.The Tigers were 2-1 in pool play, but via criteria were the top seed from their pool. St. Joseph's won a three-set match with Gilbert in the semis, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22. The Tigers led 22-21 in the deciding set, but a service error and two hitting errors helped send St. Joseph's to the title match against Marist. Marist ended up winning the platinum title, beating St. Joseph's, 25-19, 25-23. Basha defeated Gilbert for third place.
In other TOC divisions, Arizona schools fared very well in title-game matchups. Hamilton defeated Cherry Creek, Colo. (Gold Division); Flagstaff beat Sunnyslope (Silver Division); Thatcher topped Mesa High (Bronze Division); Deer Valley beat Mesa Mountain View (Diamond Division) and Tempe Prep defeated Red Mountain (Sapphire Division).
