At Tempe High School in Arizona, tennis isn’t just a sport for the McWhirter family, it’s a shared tradition. Brothers Dominic and Vincent McWhirter are the latest to pick up their rackets, following in the footsteps of their older brother, Thomas. But for them, tennis is less about competition and more about having fun, growing together, and keeping the family name alive on the court.

Coach Candice Reeves has worked with plenty of siblings, but coaching the McWhirter brothers has been a special experience.

"It's always a pleasure to coach siblings because you get to know their families well," Reeves said. "Instead of just working with them for a few years, you get to see them grow over six to eight years."

Each brother has his own style, but there’s one thing they all share: a great attitude.

"The McWhirter boys are incredibly kind and socially aware," Reeves said. "They’re hardworking, disciplined, and always bring a positive vibe."

And while brothers can be competitive, Dominic and Vincent balance it with humor and support.

"There’s definitely some friendly trash talk during drills—it’s hilarious—but they also lift each other up," Reeves added.

Even though they’re part of the same family, Dominic and Vincent bring their own energy to the game.

"Thomas, the eldest, was more reserved. Dominic and Vincent? They bring the comedy," Reeves said. "Dominic can be serious when he needs to be, but Vinny is all about keeping things light and fun."

Neither brother had much tennis experience before this season, Dominic is a junior, and Vincent is a freshman, but their backgrounds in swimming and basketball helped them catch on quickly.

"Since they were already athletes, they adapted fast," Reeves said. "They came in, worked hard, and improved right away."

For Dominic and Vincent, tennis is more than just a sport, it’s a way to make memories together.

"It’s fun, a good experience," Vincent said about playing with his brother.

Dominic agreed. "The game is already fun, but getting to play with family makes it even better."

Having the same coach as their older brother has made it even more special.

"It’s kinda weird," Vincent said. "I feel like I’m carrying my older brothers’ legacy in a way."

As for competition, they keep it chill.

"For me, it’s more about pride,” Dominic said. “If he beats me, I’m happy for him."

Coach Reeves sees the McWhirter brothers as a perfect example of resilience and determination.

"They knew they weren’t the best players when they showed up to tryouts," Reeves said. "But instead of letting that discourage them, they worked hard and kept pushing to get better."

As they continue their tennis journey, one thing is clear, the McWhirter brothers bring more than just skill to Tempe High’s team. They bring heart, humor, and a lasting legacy.
