The Hamilton baseball team will open its 2025 season with a key matchup against Red Mountain in the Adam Donnenfield Preseason Tournament on Feb. 27 at Red Mountain.

First pitch is at 3:45 p.m., and the tournament runs from Feb. 26 to March 1.

The Huskies enter another competitive season under longtime head coach Mike Woods, who has led the program since the school opened 27 years ago.

With five returning starters and 27 offseason games under their belts, Hamilton brings experience and strong team chemistry.

“These guys have played together for a long time, and that’s something you can’t teach,” Woods said. “We’ll use these early games to find our rhythm.”

Despite early-season tournaments not impacting the official standings, Woods sees it as an opportunity to assess the team.

"We still want to win the Adam Donnenfield Tournament. Every game matters to us," Woods said. "But we also use this time to evaluate players, see who steps up, and make decisions about our lineup."

Hamilton will rely on standout players, including shortstop Boston Kellner, outfielder Jaylen Payne and pitcher Cole Berge.

"Boston Kellner is just a phenomenal player — probably the best we’ve had here," Woods said.

"Jaylen is a three-year starter for us,” Woods said. "He's added some strength this year, and I expect big things from him. Cole has taken a huge jump. Last year, he was solid defensively, but I think he’s going to have a much bigger impact offensively this season."

Last season, Kellner hit .365 with 28 RBIs, Payne led the team with 12 home runs, and Berge posted a 1.98 ERA with 78 strikeouts.

Hamilton finished last season with a 23-8 record, reaching the state semifinals. Red Mountain posted a 21-9 record and made a deep playoff run of its own.

The Huskies are aiming for a deep playoff run after reaching the state semifinals last year. A strong showing in the tournament could set the tone for the season. They are targeting at least 20 wins and a potential state championship.

“This tournament will help us see where we stand.” Kellner said.

For Hamilton the Adam Donnenfield Preseason Tournament is more than just a series of games as it provides an opportunity to measure strengths and build team chemistry. Facing playoff-caliber teams like Red Mountain early in the season will be a valuable test for the Huskies.

"We want to put ourselves in a position to compete at the highest level, and I think this team has the talent to do it," Woods said.

Hamilton will face Red Mountain on Feb. 26, followed by a highly anticipated matchup against Canyon del Oro on Feb. 27 at Hamilton.

The Huskies will then play at Notre Dame Prep on Feb. 28 before closing the tournament against Chaparral on March 1.
