Pinnacle's boys basketball team may have lost a few starters from last year's final four team, but they've shown they have capable replacements this summer in increased roles.
Top-seed Pinnacle made the the plays down the stretch, getting key baskets and free throws from Lee Andari and Trey Ingram to defeat No. 3 Mesa High, 48-43, in the title game of the 2nd Annual Mesa Summer Primetime Tournament at Red Mountain High School.
Andari, who will be a senior this fall and Ingram who will be a junior, scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead a balanced effort. Mainstays and standouts Dorian Pickens and Drew Bender, the returning starters from last season, added 11 and 10, respectively.
"Lee helped us last year of the bench and started a few games because of injury and we didn't miss a beat," Pinnacle coach Charlie Wilde said. "Trey backed up the point last year and got a couple minutes a quarter. They've both played very well this summer. It's not unexpected."
Andari put Pinnacle ahead to stay, 41-40, converting a back-door layup with less than two minutes to play. A nifty no-look pass from Pickens enabled the easy bucket -- one of several above average assists Pickens accumulated in the game. Ingram made three free throws in he final minute and Bender dumped in four to help fend off feisty Mesa's bid for an upset.
In the consolation final, Mesa Mountain View edged Corona del Sol, 46-41.
Mesa coach Shane Burcar, whose team missed the playoffs last year but gained valuable experience, lamented a flat start and not making plays at crunch time.
"We came out kind of flat and scored two points the first eight minutes," Burcar said. "We played better after that. Got the lead late, but couldn't finish a couple opportunities. We're having a pretty good summer all in all."
Junior center Isaac Allen led Mesa with 15 points and senior guard D.J. Henderson added nine points -- seven in the second half. Mesa knocked off Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista to reach the final; Pinnace beat Basha and Brophy.
