At 1-10, a Mountain Pointe victory over 16-4 Willow Canyon probably felt like a dream Monday. As it turned out, that dream wasn't so far fetched.
But thanks to Willow Canyon guards Kaleel Kelly and Braylon Haman, plus some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, Willow Canyon came away with a 55-46 victory at the MLK Dream Classic at Corona del Sol.
Kelly led all scorers with 23 points, with Haman adding 16 for the Wildcats, who jumped out to an early 20-9 lead in the second quarter before Mountain Pointe charged back behind sophomore point guard Joseph Lindsey’s 12 points and seven assists.

“I gotta give Mountain Pointe credit,” Kelly said afterward. “They never backed down. We finally came together to put things away, but we need to put it together like that for all four quarters.”
At one point, the Pride held a 27-24 lead, but Willow Canyon pulled back on top, entering the final quarter with a 39-35 lead. Haman opened the fourth by knocking down a three before splitting Mountain Pointe’s defense with a nifty layup. That gave Willow Canyon a 44-35 lead, and Mountain Pointe never got closer than seven points the remainder of the game.
