May 8, 2023 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365
Scottsdale Christian standout Gracie McGovern shot a 7-under-par 63 to take a 3-stroke lead over Phoenix Country Day freshman Brady Sheridan after day one of the Division III state tournament held at the Omni Tucson National Sonoran Course on Monday. Scottsdale Prep sophomore Anya Mathur is in third place, four strokes behind McGovern.
As a team, Scottsdale Prep is clinging to a 280 to 285 lead over Scottsdale Christian. 280 is even par on the Sonoran Course and the Spartans are working on their third state championship in a row with the team beating Scottsdale Christian 582 to 627 last spring on the Catalina Course.
McGovern led the field last spring by one stroke after the first round but Scottsdale Prep standout Adam Miller came back to win the state championship 141 to 142 over McGovern. It was Miller’s second individual title. Miller is five strokes behind McGovern heading into the second round on Tuesday.
