Highland improved to 11-0 in power ranking matches. The Hawks lead the 6A Central Region at 4-0. Perry, which leads the 6A Premier Region, slipped to 10-1 and saw its nine-match, winning-streak snapped. Each of those nine wins were 3-0 sweeps. The Pumas are 3-0 in region play.
Highland's offense featured a three-pronged attack. Seniors Jase Adams, Sam Walker and Jaren Brown combined for 38 kills - Adams and Walker with 13 apiece and Brown accounting for 12.
Senior setter Hayden Winegar has settled into volleyball this spring after helping the Hawks defeat Brophy with a game-winning shot in the 6A basketball title game on March 4. Winegar amassed 51 assists on Wednesday and posted a handful of blocks. His last block ended the match.
Perry senior hitter Tyler McBurney led all players in kills. McBurney's unofficial total was 22. Puma teammates Jake Andreason, Kirk Valadez, Ty Baumgarth and Caden Ledbetter checked in with four kills apiece.
Highland's next match is home Thursday - a region affair vs. Queen Creek. Perry plays a couple non-region matches. The Pumas visit Skyline Wednesday and stay on the road Thursday facing Casteel. Highland and Perry conclude a busy week competing Friday and Saturday at Brophy Prep's annual invitational.
