It's mostly been sweep or be swept for Mesa Mountain View boys volleyball as the first month of the 2023 season draws to a close.

Mountain View opted for sweep on Thursday, delivering a 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 triumph over rival Red Mountain in a 6A East Valley Region match at Mountain View.

Mountain View's victory improved its overall power-ranking record to 5-3,  and 2-0 in region. The Toros were swept Tuesday by second-ranked Perry in a non-region match. Region wins Wednesday and Thursday have them tied for first in the region with Mesa High (2-0). Red Mountain is 4-4 in power-ranking matches and 0-1 with its region-opening loss.

Statistical leaders for Mountain View unofficially - senior Ryan Osborn with 13 kills and senior Knox Pothier with 12 kills. Pacing Red Mountain's attack were outside hitter Brexton Tompkinson with six kills and setter Jeffrey Gonzales with four kills.

Mountain View controlled the match throughout. In the opening set the Toros trailed by one three times, but after breaking a 5-all tie never trailed again with leads as large as six. Red Mountain's last surge saw it pull within 18-15. Mountain View's attack the final seven points saw seniors Ryan Osborn and Knox Pothier contribute three kills apiece with a Pothier kill finishing the set.

The second set was similar to the first. Mountain View led 9-8 before unleashing an 11-3 run. The 20-11 deficit was too much for Red Mountain to overcome. Pothier had five kills in the set and Trent Weyland served four aces in the set victory.

Red Mountain's bid to even the match at a set apiece fell short after the Lions got within 20-17. Mountain View's momentum carried to the third and final set with the Toros building a 7-1 lead before Red Mountain call time out to regroup. Two Weyland aces and kills from Jay Ricedorff, Osborn and Pothier keyed the fast start. Mountain View methodically closed out the set and match in short order.

Mountain View resumes play Tuesday with a home-region match vs. Dobson - the second of four consecutive home matches for the Toros. Red Mountain's next match is Tuesday on the road at region co-leader Mesa.
