Tenth-ranked Mountain View volleyball kept a couple streaks alive on Monday. The Toros had to claw back from two-set deficit, but were able to do so defeating Red Mountain, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21,15-8 at Toro Gym.
The victory secured the 6A East Valley Region title for Mountain View (10-5 power-ranking matches, 9-0 region) for the fourth year in a row. It also extended the Toros region winning streak to 37 matches dating back to 2019.
Prior to Monday's match, Mountain View had run roughshod over region opponents this season. All eight of its previous matches in region were 3-0 sweeps. Toros coach Clark Fleming got to see how his team could respond to some adversity.
"It was a good experience," Fleming said. "We showed resiliency which is good with the playoffs coming up."
#15 Red Mountain (13-3 prm, 7-2 region) had much to play for in this one. A win would have tied it for the region lead and surely would have kept the Mountain Lions in the top-16 in the conference. Teams who finish 9-16 in the power rankings are awarded home matches in the play-in round. With one match left Wednesday against Skyline, Red Mountain still has a chance to cement a home match in the play-on round.
Red Mountain started well in the fifth set with a 4-2 lead. That slipped away as Mountain View posted a 6-0 run supplying the Toros with momentum they carried to the end. Senior Olivia Tukuafu and sophomore Jordyn Decker delivered three kills each in the set.
Unofficial kill leaders for the match for Mountain View were Tukuafu (23), Decker (14) and Madison Green (8). For Red Mountain Olivia Seutter (13), Madi Wagner (7) and Hailey Dairman (7).
Mountain View finishes the regular season with its final region game at home vs. Westwood on Wednesday and at #4 Perry on Thursday. Red Mountain visits Skyline on Wednesday in its finale.
