Mountain View softball defeating Red Mountain? It isn't a frequent occurrence.

On Tuesday afternoon, however, as Mountain View pulled off a rare triumph over Red Mountain grinding out a 2-0 victory at Mountain View HS.

Mountain View's win on a cool, sometimes breezy afternoon, snapped an eight-game losing streak to Red Mountain over the last five years. It was only the Toros second win against their top-region rival since 2012 covering 20 meetings. Red Mountain was ranked ninth on Tuesday in the first 6A softball power-rankings of the season and Mountain View was situated at No. 12.

Mountain View pitcher Hina Huber pitched a one-hitter as the Toros improved to 15-5, overall, 5-2 in power-ranking games and 2-0 in 6A East Valley Region contests. Red Mountain dipped to 10-5, 2-2 prg and 0-1 in region.

Huber, a senior, surrendered the hit in the first inning to circle-foe, Taylor Trowbridge. Huber struck out 10, walked two and allowed two other base runners, both of whom reached on errors. Red Mountain never advanced a runner to second base.

Trowbridge gave up both runs - one earned. She allowed four hits, walked two and fanned nine. Most days her effort would have yielded a victory.

The teams matched scoreless frames the first three innings. Mountain View pushed across the unearned run in the bottom of the fourth with Huber reaching on an infield error. Devin Bowman's first of two doubles set up an RBI single to right from Maddy Bleak scoring courtesy runner Sydnee Vaughan. Bowman's second double in the sixth led to the second run as she touched home after two wild pitches for an insurance run.
