(PHOENIX)--What an emotional night it was for the Shadow Mountain seniors as they played their last match of the season at home. The Matadors met the Paradise Valley Trojans, who took it in three sets, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-20.

The first game was a quick one. The Trojans started off with a lead until outside hitter Elizabeth Roy got the first side out for the Matadors. This allowed Liya Harding to go on a three-point serving run.

The only down side of having a team full of heavy hitters like Shadow Mountain is numerous balls drilled out of bounds, which in turn gave Paradise Valley such an easy lead.

Outside Hitter Kallie Spitzke went back to serve on game point for Paradise Valley. Although the gym was silent the sense of pressure was loud and clear. After a short rally, the match ended by a dropped ball due to miscommunication from Shadow Mountain’s defense.

The second set began with the Matadors' Liya Harding serving first. The team was unsuccessful in continuing a run and the Trojans sided out immediately. Feeling the heat from the tenacious Trojans, Coach Meyers called a time out early in the game with Paradise Valley ahead 7-1.

Drama broke out on the court when the ref called a net on Shadow Mountain’s Liya Harding. “Come on, that was the ball!” the Matadors yelled from the bench, causing the ref to call over the down ref to get his input. The play was initially deemed Shadow Mountain’s point and amidst the home team’s celebration, the Trojans then also challenged that call, causing the final decision to be a replay. The score was now 14-7 Paradise Valley.

Coach Meyers used her second time out of the game, in hopes of stopping the Trojans serving run. Her hopes were successful and the Matadors sided out within their first play back on the court.

Kallie Spitzke returned back to serve, yet this time was much more successful putting points on the board. After two aces in a row, Paradise Valley used their first time out of the game with the score 18-15 Trojans.

The game was concluded by a kill from the Trojans' outside hitter, but the Matador’s comeback was not forgotten.

The third game began with a quick side out by Paradise Valley with a notable block from the outside and middle.

Shadow Mountain struggled to play short balls after having multiple drops within the first ten points of the game. Coach Meyers calls a timeout and in the huddle told her team to, “Keep the energy up, stay positive, and stay on our toes. You need to know who is going and be assertive,” according to Matador libero Laylah Hickson.

The most intense rally of the game took place near the end of the match, full of hard swings, insane digs, and mindful placements by both teams. The entire gym was anxiously waiting on the edge of their seats until a tip off Emma West’s block was dropped, ending the play.

The final match was concluded by a kill from the Trojan offense and lots of Matador tears as seniors Nicole Pelopida, Liya Harding, Kallie Spitzke, and Elizabeth Roy said their final goodbye to the Shadow Mountain Gym.
