A record-setting night came at the right time Wednesday for Valley Christian's girls basketball team. And all the records set or tied came via three-pointers.

Junior guard Tana Kemmer sank eight treys and three other teammates combined for five more supplying the impetus for Valley Christian to topple visiting Camp Verde, 57-37, in a Division III contest.

"We like to shoot the three and we'll be patient looking for shots," Valley Christian coach Scott Timmer said. "We got some good looks and the girls all have the green light."

Kemmer, who tallied a game-high 26 points,  was certainly the most persistent in that regard as her career shows thus far. Her eight threes tied her single-game school record and also allowed her to pass former Trojans' 3-point record holder Sarah Visser. The 13 threes bettered the old team mark of 12 set last week and at least oncebefore  in a prior season. Senior Logan Phillippe (14 points) added two threes as did sophomore Shanna Chen. Freshman Natalie Denk connected on the other.

Valley Christian (8-1) connected on nine two-point baskets and did not make a free throw (0-for-2). It's the second game in a row free-throw shooting was a goose egg for the Trojans, but not to their detriment.

Camp Verde (7-3), which entered the game with a pair of losses to talented D-III Valley Sanders, was done in by the threes and by the lack of defense coach Mark Showers likes to see from his squad.

"Our defense was okay on the ball, but terrible off the ball," Showers said. "The name of the game tonight was tempo. When we had it the way we wanted we were able to chip away at their lead. When it got to their helter-skelter tempo, we were in trouble. We're more successful in a half-court game."

Despite the disparity in threes (Valley Christian made 13 and Camp Verde made 2),  Camp Verde was able to whittle a 28-15 halftime deficit to 33-25 with 3:05 left in the third period. Center Lila Hickey (team-high 13 points), scored nine of those in that quarter

Losing the tempo Showers alluded to the next two minutes saw that rally go for naught. Camp Verde had to call timeout with 1:15 left in the third to try and recover from a 9-2 run. The Cowboys couldn't as the deficit grew to 42-27 and remained in double figures the rest of the night. Donnie Buss and Amanda Showers scored eight points apiece to back up Hickey's double-digit total for Camp Verde.

"We missed some chips shots inside we normally make," Showers said. "If we make half the ones we missed, I think it could have been a different game."
