Cesar Chavez pulled out a 200 to 191 point win over Campo Verde to win the Diego Gadea Wrestling Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Salpointe. The Champions took second place at the Diego Gadea last year to eventual Division III state champion Walden Grove and Campo Verde moved up from fifth place.

Cesar Chavez seniors Andres Avelar (134: 23-2) and Gio Meza (162: 22-3) were named Outstanding Wrestlers of the invitational. Avelar won the 2019 D-I state championship in the 120-pound division and Meza took third at 145.

The Champions brought home three individual titles at the Diego Gadea as did Gila Ridge and Cienega.

The Sectionals for the girls are set for Saturday, Feb. 1 at eight different venues and the boys Sectionals are slated for a week later at 16 venues.

The invitational pays tribute to former Salpointe standout Diego Gadea. Diagnosed with childhood depression at age 11, Diego passed away in 2011 at the age of 17. His parents, Jeannie and Manuel, were on hand to help recognize the medalists on Saturday afternoon.
