Central dominated Carl Hayden on the road Monday to complete regional play undefeated at 12-0 (16-1 overall).

Central was firing on all cylinders while sweeping straight sets 25-7, 25-5, and 25-9.

Senior Amanda York led the team with 10 kills, freshman Alexa Villa had eight kills and six aces, and senior Keonna Stevens had four kills.

Carl Hayden had a packed crowd for senior night, and their fans were boisterous to start the match, but Central’s dominant play silenced them.

“We always make sure we go out and do our job,” York said. “We have to take care of business regardless of what’s going on in the crowd.”

On a night that was focused on seniors, it was the freshman Villa who stole the show. Villa was dominant at the net and for the entire match, and she had a run of four straight aces to end the second set.

“I listened to what spots Coach Jessie wanted me to serve and I served aggressively,” Villa said.

Villa was also a big part of silencing the Carl Hayden crowd, as she slammed home four of her eight kills in the first set.

“I haven’t been on my game recently,” Villa said. “But, tonight really helped my confidence and I’m confident heading into playoffs.”

Central also had dominant performances from the duo of Stevens and York from the middle.

Stevens, who transferred from ASU Preparatory Academy, is a wildcard on offense. She plays middle attacker, but she will hit from the right side on certain rotations, and she had success with that tonight.

“It’s important to hit from right to middle because my arm naturally cuts right,” Stevens said. “There is also a lot of gaps in those spots, so it’s really important to hit those seams and put our team in the best position to score.”

York was a nightmare for Carl Hayden all night long, but she was on another level in the third set.

York had multiple jaw-dropping kills, but none more electric than the ball she hit off the body of a Carl Hayden defender that put an exclamation mark on Central’s outstanding night.

“What helped me was that our game is getting a lot faster,” York said. “We have to play fast volleyball when we get to playoffs, so we’ve been working on that in practice.”

Led by first-year head coaches Alex Ramirez and Gabe Macias, Central has claimed a regional title and an undefeated regional season.

Central will hang its first regional championship banner since 2003, but Macias and Ramirez were not surprised by their team’s accomplishments this season.

“They’ve just bought in,” Ramirez said. “They love each other and we love coaching this team and that shows on and off the court, so this is a great feeling.”

Central can celebrate for now, but the team has one last freedom match on Tuesday and a play-in match on Thursday, which will determine whether the Bobcats move on to the first round of playoffs.
